H.O.M.E. slates Native American Weekend May 5-6

ORLAND — A Native American Weekend, sponsored by the Rural Education Program at H.O.M.E., will be held Saturday and Sunday, May 5 and 6.

Native American speakers, storytellers and scholars will give presentations, videos will be shown, and meals will be included Saturday. Among the speakers will be Sipsis, a Penobscot poet, and Mary Philbrook, a member of the MicMac Council. Philbrook was one of the people reponsible for achieving tribal status for the MicMacs.

Skaroniate, a Mohawk from New York, and the acting director of American Indian Studies at Cornell University, will talk about “Ganienkeh” and other areas of sovereignty.

Those attending will bring something to share at the cultural exchange Saturday evening. A suggested donation will be $10 to help cover food and transportation for speakers.
