WALDOBORO — Students and teachers at the Coastal Christian School in Waldoboro welcomed the chairman of the Knox-Lincoln Soil and Water Conservation District at a special assembly recently.

Barry J. Tibbetts spoke to the group, praising them for their longtime commitment to the conservation ethic. The school has participated in many conservation activities throughout the years, particularly the District’s annual poster contest.

Tibbetts told the group that in addition to being chairman of the District, he is a dairy farmer. Stressing the importance of taking care of our precious soil and water resources, he explained that he plants the same soil that was used by his father and grandfather before him.

“Soil and water stewardship is more than just a phrase,” Tibbetts said. “It’s the responsibility each of us has and the trust placed on us by future generations.”

Tibbetts also told the assembly that he was one of a panel of judges for the annual poster contest and explained the difficulties in choosing winners from so many excellent entries.

Twelve hundred students in Knox and Lincoln counties entered the 1989 contest. Timothy R. Bennett, a student at Coastal Christian School, was presented with a $50 bond and a certificate for his first-place poster in Division III of the ’89 contest.

Top district winners and school winners will receive a fruit tree which can be picked up at the district office May 5. Students will be reminded by mail of the pickup time and place.
