Brownville fifth-graders visit Boston sites

BROWNVILLE — At 6:30 a.m. Friday, the Milo bus loaded with fifth-graders and chaperones departed, bound for, as one parent chaperone said, “a weekend these kids will never forget.”

Under the direction of fifth-grade teacher Roberta Smolenack, the pupils began in the fall planning for the three-day trip.

Classroom mathematics were used to plan the budget for the trip; social studies were used to plan the itinerary and pinpoint historical sites of interest; and language arts were employed with the writing of letters for reservations and other details of the trip.

Activities included a tour of the L.L. Bean Store, a Brush Hill tour on the Beantown Trolley, a tour of the U.S. Naval Yard in Charleston and a tour of historic places, the waterfront, downtown centers of business, the Museum of Science, Faneuil Hall, the Old South Meeting House and the Boston Tea Party ship and a re-enactment of the Tea Party titled “The Tea Is Brewing,” the Prudential Center and the John Hancock Building Observatory.

Sunday morning a tour of the Boston Navy Yard and the USS Constitution and the Bunker Hill Monument, as well as a climb of the structure for those who wished, were planned. The afternoon hours were spent at the New England Aquarium, where the entire year is focused on the rain forests of the world. Pupils were scheduled to view the dolphin show before boarding the bus for the trip home late Sunday afternoon.

Expenses for the trip totaled $3,141. The treasury had a balance of $240. Pupils taking the trip were Mark Dell’Olio, Chris Redding, William Graves, Ryan Larrabee, Bryce Royal, Michael Heath, Michael Hoxie, Joshua Guthrie, Brian Hall, Rusty Ladd, John Dickinson, Eric Dumond, Andrew Lamontagne, Robin Carr, Kylie Rendzia, Courtney Chessa, Kristy Hazlett, Julie Cusack, Melissa Curry, Jenny Landry, Robin Raye, Jaime McKenzie, Keri Rushing, Jenny Lacey and Dixie Monahan.
