Camp Kieve plans leadership session

NOBLEBORO — Leadership Decisions Institutes began in mid-April at Camp Kieve on Lake Damariscotta in Nobleboro, and will continue through June 1.

Each week, groups of 80 students selected from Maine schools spend five days and four nights participating in classes and activities designed to foster self-confidence and decision-making skills.

Students attend four hour-long classes each morning taught by professional teachers and consultants. There are no homework assignments or grades, but personal involvement and discussions are encouraged.

The days are rounded out by recreation periods and meals, and there is a nightly activity.

Richard C. Kennedy, founder of the program, was a secondary school teacher and administrator for 25 years. He has served on the Governor’s Task Force on the Prevention of Adolescent Pregnancy and is a member of the Maine State Board of Education.

Other faculty members include professional educators experienced in teaching about alcohol and drug abuse, vocational aspirations, human sexuality and confidence building.

Twelve college students act as resident overseers.

There are also late summer and fall sessions.
