McKernan, Gregg, Dukakis to meet federal comptroller

CONCORD, N.H. — The governors of Maine, New Hampshire and Massachusetts will meet this month with the federal comptroller of the currency to discuss New England’s troubled banking industry.

New Hampshire Gov. Judd Gregg, Massachusetts Gov. Michael Dukakis and Maine Gov. John McKernan will meet with Comptroller Robert Clarke May 21 in Washington, Gregg spokesman Warren Henderson said Thursday.

The governors hope to meet the same day with Alan Greenspan, the chairman of the Federal Reserve Board, Henderson said.

The governors of Connecticut and Vermont were asked to attend the meeting with Clarke, but can’t make it, Henderson said. He said officials still are waiting to hear from the governors of Rhode Island and New Jersey.

Henderson said the governors want to convey to Clarke the feeling that the federal government is over-regulating New England’s banking industry.
