Restaurateur plans outdoor cafe seating

A downtown Bangor restaurateur plans to transfer a vacant lot into an outdoor eatery if the City Council goes along with his plans.

Daniel Tremble runs the Norumbega Cafe at 34 Central St. He plans to build outdoor cafe seating for the empty lot at 24 Central St. People would buy their lunches to go from the Norumbega and walk up the street to enjoy their food in the sunshine.

The 10-year lease calls for the rent to escalate from $500 the first year to $1,500 the final year. It also has a provision that would permit Tremble to build an outdoor grill.

The Finance Committee of the Bangor City Council voted 3-0 to recommend that the council approve the lease.

“If the council approves it next Monday, I hope to be out there within two weeks,” Tremble said after the committee’s vote. “The ice cream is coming Thursday. I’ve just got to build some tables.”
