SANFORD — A Sanford fabric mill inspected by federal officials following a sulfuric acid spill last January has been cited for 99 health and safety violations, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration said Friday.
International Woolen Inc. was hit with proposed penalties totaling $50,990, according to OSHA.
“From the lack of proper signs and the unsanitary conditions of the lavatories through the locking of the fire doors and the absence of emergency response training, this is a worksite charaterized by a disregard for even basic employee safety,” said C. William Freeman, OSHA area director for Maine.
“The alleged violations run the gamut from the minor to the potentially lethal and show a workplace unprepared for response to emergency chemical spills,” Freeman said.
Officials of the Italian-owned fabric manufacturing company could not be reached for comment.
