Acrylic takes top honors at art show

An untitled piece by Cheri Walton took top honors in the Bangor Art Society Bangor Open Juried Art Show 1990 held May 8 at the Bangor Public Library. Walton’s work earned her first place in the acrylic division as well as the Grumbacher Award and 1990 Best of Show.

Other winners were: Acrylic — 2nd place Crystal, Crystal by Cheri Walton; 3rd place, The Windows by Iver Lofuing. Oils — 1st place, Midnight in Bangor by Patricia Vadas; 2nd place, Dream by JoAnne Houlsen; and 3rd place June Sunset — Monhegan by Michael Vermette. Pastels — 1st place, Vietnam Reflections by Keith Curtis; 2nd place, Blue Window View by Deborah Schooley; and 3rd place, The Pulling Ring by Keith Curtis. Mixed Media — 1st place, Two Men by Cheri Walton; 2nd place, All Souls Quadrille by Diana Young; and 3rd place, Cracked Mirror — Double Vision by Peter Skowronski. Watercolor — 1st place, Three Tin Soldiers by Sylvia Murdock; 2nd place, Ending the Season by Michael Vermette; 3rd place, Sun Table by Janet Laird-Lagasse; and Honorable Mention, Rocks & Water by Janet Laird-Lagasse.

Judges for the show were Vertene W. Carter, artist, naturalist, educator, gallery owner and member of the Washington-based Women in the Arts; Mathew Pierce O’Donnell, contemporary realist and art instructor in the mid-coast area; and Michael H. Lewis, professor and chairperson of the art department at the University of Maine.
