WALDOBORO — Each spring Monhegan Island is host to warblers and other migratory birds as they touch down to rest and feed en route north along the Great Eastern Flyway. The Mid-Coast Audubon Society’s annual trip coincides with the National Audubon Society’s annual birdathon, which offers a chance to count more than 90 species.

Interested persons are invited to join MCAS members for a three-day weekend, Saturday-Monday, May 19-21, and enjoy the bird life and early spring signs on the island. Tom Martin, an expert on birds, will be in residence to offer his expertise. MCAS Vice-President Mark DiGirolamo will lead a walk on Sunday.

Accommodations at rental cottages with cooking facilities, and only fireplaces and oil lamps for heat, are available. Persons attending can cook communally or buy meals at the Trailing Yew. The Island Store is open for supplies.

The cost for two nights is $60 for members, $70 for non-members. The cost does not include the round-trip fare on the Laura B of $20. Participants should meet at 10 a.m. Saturday, May 19, at the Port Clyde dock. (Return at 1:30 p.m. on May 21). There will be a small parking lot fee at Port Clyde.

The deadline for reservations is May 14. Reservations can be made by sending a check, payable to MCAS, to Pat Cliney, field trip chairman, 27 Jameson Point Road, Rockland 04841. For further information, call 596-0187.
