LUBEC — Washington County young people will have an opportunity to participate as pages and in other functions at the Maine Democratic state convention in Presque Isle, June 1, 2 and 3.
High school and college students are eligible to serve as pages, staff assistants and “shadows” for dignitaries, according to Kathlene Parker of Lubec.
“We believe young people should have the opportunity to participate directly in the political process, and our 1990 state convention page program is a reaffirmation of our commitment to the youth of Maine,” Parker said.
Several dozen convention positions remain open to assist members of the host committee; aid the staffs of congressional, senatorial and gubernatorial candidates; staff convention headquarters; participate in demonstrations for major office candidates and assisting the convention’s sergeant-at-arms.
The biennial Maine Democratic State Convention will be held at the Northern Maine Forum in Presque Isle and is expected to draw 1,500 delegates and alternates. U.S. Sen. George Mitchell and 1st District Rep. Joseph Brennan are expected to play prominent roles in the convention. Key party officials will address convention sessions and a party platform will be adopted.
