Bangor boys’ depth tips Brunswick in `A’ track

Oftentimes, in the sport of track and field, sheer talent overcomes team depth when it comes to the “big” meets.

The showdown in Saturday’s Eastern Maine Class A boys championship meet was a showcase of the Bangor Rams’ depth against the Brunswick Dragons’ top-of-the-line talent.

This time around, depth won out, giving the Rams (who only got four first-place finishes compared to Brunswick’s nine) their second consecutive EM `A’ track title by a 136-126 edge.

The numbers read this way: Brunswick had 90 points in first-place finishes and 36 points from its second- through sixth-place finishes. The Rams, meanwhile, got just 40 points from victories and 96 points in spots two through six.

Jason Simmons (100 hurdles), Brent Pendleton (javelin), Tom Messervey (discus), and Jeff Harrison (3200) picked up the first places for the Rams but it was others like Matt Watkins (second in the 200 and 400 and third in the 100) and David Dow (second in the triple jump, third in the long jump) that proved key.

The Rams’ depth helped overpower Brunswick’s David Domingos, whose three-victory, state record performance (45-6 triple jump) keyed Brunswick.

In the girls’ meet, Cony of Augusta eked out a 2-point margin of victory over Brunswick, 84-82.

Sally Massey won the 200, Amy Parent won the 3200, and Cony’s 400-meter relay team all picked up victories to help key the win.

Amy Winchester of Brewer was a two-event winner in the shot put and discus.

At Winslow High School, sprinter Scott Jones won the 100 and the 200 and anchored the winning 4×100-meter relay squad to lift Nokomis of Newport to the EM boys `B’ crown.

Nokomis outpointed runnerup Hampden 120 1/2-104 1/2 to win the crown.

The only other EM champ for the Newport-based Warriors was two-event winner Matt Baldwin (110 hurdles, 300 hurdles).

The Old Town girls, meanwhile, amassed 124 points to claim their second consecutive Class B title.

Wendy King (100 hurdles, 300 hurdles) Renee Campbell (javelin), and Bridget Ziegelaar (long jump) each picked up victories for the Indians. King and Ziegelaar were also on the winning 400 relay team.

At Orono High School, it was perenial Class C power Maranacook of Readfield that pulled off the sweep winning both and boys and girls championships.

The Black Bear boys topped Orono 155-108 while the girls bettered Foxcroft Academy by 10 points, 72-62.

Matt Knox won the 400 and 800 to key the Black Bears, who used some pretty impressive team depth themselves in scoring 95 points through second- through sixth-place finishes.

The Orono Red Riots 4×400 relay team of Bill Beutel, Scott Hume, Terry O’Neal, and Nick Pearce set a state record with a 3:33.9 clocking.

In the girls’ meet, the Black Bears’ Jen MacGillivary (1600) picked up the team’s only victory but the EM champs got 5 second-place finishes en route to the win.

Three girls won three events each: Christina Strong of Georges Valley in Thomaston, (100 and 300 hurdles, 800), Evie Eich of MDI, (TJ, LJ, HJ), and Kristina Edgecomb of Hall-Dale in Farmingdale (discus, javelin, SP). Each picked up 30 points for their teams.
