Thursday’s good weather was good news for State Team Tennis Tournament organizers as it allowed area high school tennis teams to get in their preliminary and quarterfinal matches.
Thursday marked the first day of a crowded schedule of school matches that will continue through next week.
In Eastern Maine Class A boys quarterfinal action, the seventh-seeded Gardiner boys upset No. 2 Caribou 3-2 in Caribou, thanks to strong play from its doubles teams. Gardiner will play the winner of Friday’s match between No. 3 Waterville and No. 6 Presque Isle on Tuesday.
Also Friday, the No. 1 Bangor boys host No. 8 Hampden and No. 4 Old Town hosts No. 5 Brunswick.
Also at Caribou, the No. 4 Caribou girls defeated No. 5 Hampden Academy 4-1. Caribou will play the winner of Friday’s quarterfinal match between No. 1 Waterville and No. 8 Bangor on Tuesday.
In Friday’s other Class A quarterfinal girls matchups, No. 6 Brunswick will play at third-seeded Old Town, No. 8 Bangor visits top-seeded Waterville and No. 2 Gardiner hosts No. 7 Cony of Augusta.
In Class B preliminary round boys action, the 10th-seeded John Bapst upset No. 7 Foxcroft Academy 3-2 at Dover-Foxcroft.
In the other boys prelim, No. 8 Penobscot Valley of Howland eliminated No. 9 Van Buren 3-2. John Bapst’s upset win moves them into the No. 8 spot for the rest of the tournament. Penobscot Valley moves up into the No. 7 spot.
In the “B” boys quarterfinals on Saturday, John Bapst will play No. 1 Camden-Rockport at Rockport and Penobscot Valley visits No. 2 Dexter. Also, No. 3 Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield will host No. 6 Schenck of East Millinocket and fourth-seeded Ellsworth will host No. 5 Houlton.
In the Class B girls ranks, the No. 7 Penobscot Valley girls advanced to the quarterfinals after 10th-seeded Madawaska forfeited its prelim match. Penobscot Valley will play No. 2 Van Buren Saturday.
In another girls prelim, No. 9 Ellsworth upset eighth-ranked Maine Central Institute 3-2. Thus, Ellsworth takes over the eighth spot and will play No. 1 Schenck Saturday.
No. 3 Mount Desert Island will host No. 6 Woodland Friday, and fifth-seeded Houlton will travel to play No. 4 Foxcroft Academy on Saturday.
