BOSTON – University of Maine sophomore shortstop Brian Seguin’s bloop double during a three-run, second-inning rally put the New England University Division (Division I) All-Stars ahead to stay as they went on to rout the College Division (Divisions II-III) stars 13-3 behind a 21-hit attack at Boston’s Fenway Park here Friday afternoon.

Seguin was one of six players from the University of Maine and the University of Southern Maine to participate. The others were his Black Bear teammates, junior center fielder Mark Sweeney, junior designated hitter Andy Hartung, and senior pitcher Jim Dillon, and University of Southern Maine junior pitcher Greg Coppeta and junior outfielder Bob Prince.

The University stars trailed 1-0 in the second when the University of Connecticut’s Sal Tinnerello reached on a misplayed fly ball double, UMass’ Brian Bright singled, and UConn’s Marek Drabinski hit a run-scoring double off the wall to tie it. Seguin then poked a pop fly double into shallow right to make it 2-1 and BC’s Brian Kelley hit a sacrifice fly to make it 3-1.

The University stars broke the game open by making it 6-1 with three sixth-inning runs off Coppeta on a walk, consecutive singles by Central Connecticut’s Vin Rossy, UMass’ Derek Dana (RBI) and New Hampshire’s Dave Stewart (RBI) before a double play grounder plated the other run.

Seguin went 1-for-2 in the game, Hartung went 1-for-3 with an infield single, and Sweeney went 0-for-3 with two strikeouts.

Dillon hurled the sixth and seventh innings, allowing just a solo homer to right by Assumption College (Mass.) first baseman Jeff Sherman and two walks. Dillon struck out two.
