NEWPORT — The Newport Board of Selectmen will meet at 4 p.m. Thursday, June 7, a departure from their regular night and time, because of the previously scheduled Nokomis Regional High School graduation on their meeting night.
On the agenda is a public hearing for Allen and Linda Brown. The Browns, who operate the Carriage House Inn on Main Street, are applying for victualers’ and innkeepers’ permits.
Richard Stone, chairman of the board, also will present comments from the Chamber of Commerce on a business license proposal.
Ron Veaulieu, the town’s accountant, will discuss a possible change in the community’s fiscal year. Newport’s fiscal year is from January to December. A proposed change, to be researched, is from July to June.
“On the surface,” said Town Manager Carlo Pilgrim, “it appears to be the logical thing to do, but this may not be the case.”
Also on the agenda is a donation of pine trees to the community by Boy Scout Troop 63. Scoutmaster Phil Brown said that 15 seedlings the scouts received at a recent camporee at Great Northern Paper Co. were voted to be donated to the town.
Discussion also is expected on charting and marking the waters of Sebasticook Lake. Pilgrim said that the Bureau of Parks and Recreation no longer provides this service, but will provide the necessary buoys. Other options will be presented, he said.
Pilgrim also plans to update selectmen concerning a recent landlords’ meeting with planner Hans Klunder on Main Street renovation and cleanup plans. He also will report on how more than $2,000 in donations for fire victims was disbursed.
Town Hall dates to remember include: June 13, master plan and comprehensive planning meeting; June 27, public hearing on master plan; June 20, Rep. Robert Tardy will attend selectmen’s meeting.
