In the spirit of “Halloween” and “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” Bass Park, Bangor’s summer-long theme for municipal and political entertainment, will be featured in two parts:

Bass Park I is a referendum vote Tuesday on the City Council decision to ask the staff negotiating team to discuss a lease arrangement for the facility with Bass Park Associates.

Bass Park II, the sequel, is a November referendum on an identical question.

Absurd? Yes. Hopeless? No.

There is something the public can do to end this ridiculous excercise. Vote “NO” on Tuesday.

These referenda are bad government — the city should not be run by public votes on council decisions. They are unnecessary, because they challenge a council order that merely instructs the city manager and selected staff to negotiate with BPA. No commitment. Just talk.

On this local question, voters in Bangor can make a strong statement against this kind of ballot inanity by just saying “NO.” Maybe the producers will get the message.
