Tigers upset Indians; MA, Stearns advance

One top seed fell while another top seed will wait until Thursday to its Eastern Maine softball playoff quarterfinal game.

In Class A, No. 8 Gardiner scored seven runs in the top of the eighth inning to upset top-ranked Skowhegan, 14-3, by a 13-6 score. In Class B, meanwhile, No. 1 ranked Maine Central Institute of Pittsfield had its quarterfinal game against Rockland postponed until Thursday at 4 p.m.

In other Class B action, second-seeded Mattanawcook Academy of Lincoln defeated No. 7 Fort Kent 13-1 while No. 4 Stearns of Millinocket topped No. 5 Winslow 6-3 and third-seeded Bucksport topped Houlton 11-4.

Mattanawcook will host Bucksport in one semifinal on Saturday while Stearns will await the result of the MCI-Rockland game before knowing where and when it will play.

In Class A, three Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference teams advance to the semifinals.

While Gardiner moved in thanks to its upset over Skowhegan, No. 4 Cony eked out a 4-3 win over fifth-seeded Presque Isle and Lawrence of Fairfield, the third seed, downed No. 6 Old Town 8-6. In other Class A action, Brewer, the No. 2 seed, defeated seventh-ranked Nokomis of Newport 11-5.

Cony will host Gardiner in one Saturday semifinal while Brewer will play host to Lawrence.

Times for Saturday semifinals have yet to be determined.

Class B

Mattanawcook 13, Fort Kent 1

At Lincoln, Nicolette McGinley hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning and singled three times to lead the Lynx over the Wa

April Lyons pitched the complete six innings for the Lynx, allowing one unearned run on one hit, striking out five and walking four. Also for the 12-5 Lynx, Heidi Bruce hit a two-run homer in the fourth and singled three times and Holly Ludden hit a three-run homer in the fifth.

For Fort Kent, 10-5, Becky Gagnon broke up Lyons’ no-hitter with a single in the fifth inning.

At Millinocket, Rachael Perry broke a 3-3 tie in the bottom of the sixth inning with a bases-loaded, two-run single to lead host Stearns to the win.

For the 11-4 Minutemen, Jessie Beadnell pitched a two-hitter, struck out seven and walked four to improve her record to 11-3. Seana Dionne hit a double.

For the 12-5 Black Raiders, Danielle Paradis tripled and Jen Harrison had a single.

Class A

Gardiner 13, Skowhegan 6

At Skowhegan, RBI singles by Sharon Herse and Tammy Kernan coupled with four errors allowed Gardiner to score seven runs in the top of the eighth inning to pull off the upset.

Lynn Chadwick led the Tigers’ 12-hit attack with a single and a double while Herse, Kernan, and Jenni Glidden each posted two singles.

For Skowhegan, which was playing without three starters (injuries) including its top pitcher, Judy Searles had three singles while Julie MacMichael had two singles and two RBIs. Debbie MacMichael added two singles and an RBI while Jessica Moore had a pair of base hits.

Lawrence 8, Old Town 6

At Fairfield, Pam Michaud doubled and singled to lead the host Lawrence Bulldogs to the victory over Old Town.

For the 13-4 Bulldogs, Crystal Bolduc, Kristi Hamlin and Kathy McEwen each singled twice. Hamlin notched the complete-game win.

For the 11-6 Indians, Julie Fadrigon had a triple and a single. Michelle Corro and Brandi McLaughlin each singled twice. Lori Cummings hit a three-run triple.

Cony 4, Presque Isle 3

At Augusta, Jenny Vautour drew a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh inning as Cony moved onto the semifinals.

Jen Prime had two hits, including one in the seventh as she ended up on third and scored the winning run for the 12-5 Rams.

For Presque Isle, 10-7, Amy Beaulieu and Jodi Logan each singled.
