MILO — Two children died Thursday morning in a mobile home
ffire that also left their mother and another of her children
hhospitalized.
Jessica Neil, 7, was pronounced dead at the scene of the fire
aat the Gould Street Trailer Park, and Douglas Carver Jr., 5, was
ppronounced dead at Mayo Regional Hospital in Dover-Foxcroft.
The children’s mother, Robin Damon Neil, 24, of Milo, along
wwith her 15-month-old son, Tony Woodard Jr., were transported to
tthe Dover-Foxcroft hospital where they were stabilized for
ttransportation to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor.
The youngster was listed in critical condition with burns and
ssuffering from smoke inhalation. The mother was in serious
ccondition, said Stephen McCausland of the state Public Safety
DDepartment. The mother, who reportedly jumped out a window,
rreceived burns over 60 percent of her body, authorities said.
Murrel Harris, a spokesman for the Milo Fire Department, said the
ffire was reported at 7:10 a.m. and that the 1974 mobile home was
eengulfed in flames when firemen arrived at the scene. Fire was
ccontained to the three-bedroom trailer.
“Firefighters had to enter the home to retrieve the three
cchildren who were still in their bedrooms,” McCausland said.
The mother climbed out a window and was outside the mobile home
wwhen firefighters arrived. The children had to be removed through a
wwindow, authorities said.
Three firemen, Douglas Crawford, Kevin Black and Randy Knowles,
wworked with airpacks throughout the building. They passed the
cchildren through a doorway and windows to other fire personnel and
TThree Rivers Ambulance Service personnel.
Investigators from the State Fire Marshal’s Office spent the
dday at the scene trying to determine the cause of the fire and
pplanned to return Friday, said McCausland.
According to Harris, 17 Milo firemen responded to the call,
ttaking two pumper trucks, one ladder truck and Rescue 7.
