Stags, Capers win net titles

Western Maine teams swept state high school team tennis honors Saturday as the Cheverus boys of Portland, York boys and Cape Elizabeth girls each won state championships in their divisions.

Three state final matches were played Saturday. The Class A girls match between Brunswick and Deering was postponed until 9 a.m. on Monday at Brunswick High School.

In the Class A boys final, Cheverus blanked the Bangor Rams 5-0. The Stags overpowered Bangor, winning 10 of 11 sets.

The Cape Elizabeth girls ended Mount Desert Island’s string of three straight state titles in Class B by edging the Trojans 3-2 at The Tennis Racket indoor courts in South Portland.

The key to Cape’s victory was Julie Small’s 7-5, 1-6, 7-5 win over MDI’s Jenny Wilson in the third singles match. Both of the Capers’ doubles teams won in straight sets.

In the Class B boys title match, the York boys blanked Camden-Rockport 5-0 in a match that was much closer than the score. Two of the singles matches and one doubles match went three sets. One set ended with a tiebreaker.
