Twins sweep Skowhegan in twinbill opener

ORONO – The Old Town-Orono Twins used some solid pitching to open their American Legion baseball season with a doubleheader sweep over the Skowhegan Log Drivers at Orono High here Saturday.

The Twins won the first game 3-1 behind a Ricky Wickett four-hitter and the second 4-2 behind a Jamie Pete three-hitter.

In the second game, Pete struck out seven and walked seven. He was backed by Mitch Stone, who singled twice and drove in a run. Steve Coombs added two singles.

Coombs tripled, singled and drove in a run for the winners in the first game. Chad Eddy chipped in with a run-scoring single and Harry Feero singled twice.

Wickett struck out three and walked only one.

Mike Savage, who gave up only four hits, was the losing pitcher in the first game and Rob Bolduc was the losing pitcher in the second after scattering six hits.

Brewer wins three games

At Heddericg Field in Brewer, the Brewer Falcons jumped out to a 3-0 start by nipping Bangor 8-7 Sunday and sweeping a doubleheader from Pittsfield on Saturday 12-2 in the first game and 9-5 in the second.

On Sunday, Matt Ayer singled three times and had two RBIs to lead Brewer to the win.

For 3-0 Brewer, Ron Hewes struck out 13 in six innings to get the win. He also singled twice and batted in a run. Bill Swift doubled, singled and had an RBI while Jamie White hit a pair of singles for an RBI.

For 0-1 Bangor, Rich Rygalski doubled twice and had two RBIs. Brett Soucie and David Foley each had a pair of singles.

On Saturday, White wielded the hot bat for the Falcons, tripling twice, singling twice and driving in three runs.

In the first game for the Falcons, Matt Ayer singled three times. Hewes had a double, a single and two RBIs. George O’Connor singled twice and had 2 RBIs. White and Tony Motolla combined on a two-hitter.

For 0-2 Pittsfield, Steve Shaw and Bennie Campbell each had a single for the only hits.

In the second game, White tripled, singled and had an RBI. Ayer singled twice.

For Pittsfield, Shane Wright doubled and singled.
