Evelyn Grant’s 83 leads Hermon G

HERMON – There were dozens of happy women looking out the

wwindows from the safety of the Hermon Elementary School as a fierce

tthunderstorm raked the Greater Bangor are late Wednesday afternoon.

The women were happy for three reasons: first, they had just

ffinished an enjoyable day of golf competing in the Michelob Lite

HHermon Meadow Ladies Golf Invitational; second, they had just

ffinished a delicious chicken lunch and been awarded their prizes;

aand third, they hadn’t been caught out on the course in the storm.

It was veteran golfer Evelyn Grant of Bangor Municipal who

cclaimed the championship of this bi-annual event with an 83 in the

AA division.

Grant, 67, readily admits to having played golf for 65 years.

“”My mother first took me out on the course when I was two years

oold,” she said.

Grant won Women’s Maine State Golf Association titles in 1952

aand 1953, and won the WMSGA Seniors championship in 1985.

Grant credited her win Wednesday to a good front nine when she

sshot a 38 on the par 36-36-72 course, although she had a 45 on the

bback nine.

Nellie Gerrish of Kebo Valley Golf Club in Bar Harbor took

ssecond gross with an 85 and Audrey Gunn of Hermon Meadow was third

wwith an 86. Gunn, who won the seniors title in 1983, admitted to

bbeing off her game Wednesday after having driven a group of women

tto Bethel Tuesday to compete in the WMSGA Metropolitan Touranment.

Gunn, according to her partners, was playing par golf until she

ggot into trouble on the sixth hole. Hitting safely over the marsh,

sshe landed in the sand trap and took an 11.

“To get an 86 you can see how well she played all day,” Dorina

MMartin of Prospect Hill in Lewiston pointed out.

Fourth place went to Bern Michaud of Fort Kent with a 91, and

ffifth place to Phyllis Bradeen of Lakeview in Burnham (93).

In tournaments of this type, according to WMSGA handicapper

KKaren Feeney of Hermon Meadow, who was the handicapper for this

ttournament, a first net prize is awarded on the basis of throwing

oout the gross score.

For the first time in this tournament, chairman Viola Webb

aannounced that the gold putter would go to the first net finisher

rrather than the first gross finisher.

Tina Colburn of Bangor Muni, who believes it will take her

aanother summer to get her game back in truly competitive shape,

ttook top net honors with a 85-68.

Second net was a three-way tie at 70 between Viola Webb, Judy

LLee, Hermon; and Martin. Webb and Martin each recorded a gross

sscore of 86 with Lee coming in at 88. Fifth net went to Ann Lang of

HHermon Meadow with 89-73.

First gross in the B Division went to Sharon Dauphinee of

BBangor Muni with an 87 and first gross in C Division to Linda

SSirabella of Penobscot Valley Country Club with a 102.

With several awards in a variety of categories being supplied

bby the sponsor, Michelob, umbrellas went to six individuals who had

tthe most accurate drives and hit closest to the pin.

Closest to the line on the second fairway went to Jean Sweetser

oof Piscataquis in A Division, Bea Quiron of Lakeview in B Division

aand Elaine Davis of Hermon in C Division.

Closest to the pin on No. 3 was Dauphinee at 2 feet, 11 inches;

EEvie Wing of PVCC on No. 8 with 18 feet, 2 inches; Quiron on No. 12

wwith 9 feet, 5 inches; and Grant on No. 16 with 10 feet, 3 inches.

Webb said the tournament, although attracting a smaller number

oof participants than usual because of the two-day Metropolitan

MMonday and Tuesday and two other tournaments elsewhere on the same

dday, was nonetheless a pleasing event. “It went well and it was as

ggood as expected,” she said. “There were a few conflicts which kept

tthe numbers down, but everyone has a great time here, the course is

iin wonderful condition, and we were very pleased with the outcome.”
