ORONO — Funeral services will be held 10 a.m. Saturday at the Church of Universal Fellowship here for Charles E. Crossland, 95, a former acting president of the University of Maine, who died Tuesday at a Bangor hospital.
Crossland, for whom the university alumni center is named, graduated from the University of Maine in 1917 and spent his 44-year career there in various capacities until his retirement from the university administration in 1961.
He began his career with the Agricultural Extension Service and then became executive secretary of the General Alumni Association, director of student and public relations, assistant to the president, acting president and vice president for administration.
He received an honorary degree upon retirement and then became executive secretary, and later, director of communications of the Pulp and Paper Foundation.
He also was a member of the university board of trustees, director of the Memorial Union Building Fund, secretary of the University of Maine Foundation, and a trustee of the State Educational Television Association.
Crossland was a 33rd Degree Mason and belonged to many Masonic and church organizations.
Survivors include a daughter, two sons, 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.
