SEARSPORT — Three local teen-agers and a New York man remained hospitalized Wednesday with injuries they received in a two-car accident Tuesday that tied up traffic on Route 1.
Peter Mason Jr., 17, of Searsport, who was the most seriously injured of the five teen-agers involved in the collision, remained at Eastern Maine Medical Center for a serious injury to his nose.
Autumn Miliano, 16, and Shelly Hopkins, 15, were listed in stable condition at Waldo County General Hospital with head injuries. Geoff Knox, 16, and Jason Farris, 18, were treated for minor cuts and bruises and then released.
James Rogers, 68, of Elmont, N.Y., was listed in guarded condition at Waldo County General with chest injuries Wednesday, while his 68-year-old wife, Margaret, was released Tuesday after treatment for minor injuries.
Farris was the driver of the 1978 pickup truck in which the five youths were riding. He, Knox and Hopkins were riding in the truck’s cab while Mason and Miliano were riding in the truck bed. James Rogers was the operator of the 1983 Ford sedan that struck Farris’ truck head on.
Police Chief Roger Ouellette said neither of the drivers involved in the accident was at fault.
“It was a two-car accident caused by a third vehicle,” he said. “These were good kids minding their own business. They and the other couple were innocent victims.”
The driver of the third vehicle, Kevin Bryant, 35, of Washington, was charged with failure to yield.
Sgt. James Gillway said Bryant was driving a dump truck south on Route 1 near the Irving Oil truckstop when he attempted a left turn onto Station Avenue.
Gillway said Bryant told him he apparently misjudged the clearance between his truck and Rogers’ vehicle because his turn forced Rogers to swerve around him, directly into the path of the Farris pickup. As a result, the Rogers and Farris vehicles collided. The force of the impact flipped the pickup truck onto its side, throwing those riding in the bed onto the highway.
Ouellette said it was fortunate that Farris and Rogers were traveling at a slow rate of speed or the injuries could have been much worse.
All seven of the injured were taken by Searsport, Stockton Springs and Belfast ambulances to WCGH. The accident occurred at about 3:30 p.m. Tuesday and backed up traffic for miles.
