Committee presents sketch of proposed park

PALMYRA — Members of the Palmyra Recreation Committee met recently to prepare a preliminary sketch plan for the recently purchased land surrounding the town office. The 40-acre parcel is intended for recreational purposes and although the committee does not have the final say, it is expected that the Board of Selectmen will take their recommendations seriously.

According to the plan, an existing dirt road will be used for access, ending in a large parking area. Electric service will enter through this area. A new ball diamond was a high priority, with the possibility of several more in coming years.

Planners recommended that certain areas be set aside for picnicking, hiking, horseshoes, basketball courts and tennis. They also recommended that a skating rink be constructed outside the roadway gate to provide for winter access without having to plow the entire access road.

A grant specialist provided committee members with information regarding a recreation grant but committee members voted that they felt it was beyond their resources to participate this year. They also voted to send a letter to the selectmen that would outline their plans for the property and their recommendations.

Members of the committee are Saul Pelkey, Travis Tweedie, Willis Millett and Mike Cray. The next meeting will be at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 26.

Palmyra’s Planning Board also met earlier this week to discuss two land use permits and the possibility of setting a fee for such permits. Robert Brown of Massachusetts was granted a land use permit for his property at Deer Run Estates. His permit had been tabled by the Planning Board pending legal clarification regarding road improvements in the subdivision.

A land use permit for Wayne Small on the Raymond Road was tabled pending septic system approval and some communication from the Department of Environmental Protection regarding the land use.
