CORINNA — A head-on collision Sunday morning on St. Albans Road has left four people dead and three injured.
According to Maine State Trooper David Bowler, three people, including the drivers of both compact cars were killed when they collided, and a fourth person died en route to the hospital.
Killed in the accident were Karen Lane, 32, of Hartland, and Albert Lockwood, 35, Dianna Carmichael, 16, and Janice Carmichael, 33, all of St. Albans.
Transferred to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor for multiple injuries were Jerry Lane, 28, of Hartland, Alicia McAlpine, 7,town unknown and Keith Wells, 18, of Pittsfield.
Witnesses at the scene said that both vehicles were in their proper lanes until just moments before the head-on collision. There were no skid marks visible by either car, although Bowler said that “critical speed scuffs” were visible at the scene. These marks are made, he said, as a vehicle moves from side to side or lane to lane. Both cars were destroyed in the accident, which closed the roadway to all but emergency traffic for more than three hours.
During rescue attempts, several relatives of some of the victims arrived on the scene.
Newport Rescue Squad used the Jaws of Life tool to extricate several of the victims. Ambulances from Dexter, Corinna, Pittsfield and Hartland/St. Albans responded to the scene.
Three of the people were killed in one vehicle, while the driver of the second car died on the way to Sebasticook Valley Hospital.
Bowler said that Karen Lane was driving a 1986 Ford with her husband, Jerry, as the sole passenger.
Driving a 1986 Chevrolet was Albert Lockwood. Both of the Carmichaels, McAlpine and Wells were passengers in his vehicle. Although exact conditions were not available, Bowler said that McAlpine was thrown from the vehicle and that Wells and Lane were injured seriously.
Bowler said that the occupants of both vehicles were familiar with each other. He is continuing to investigate the accident.
Assisting with reconstruction and traffic were officers from Dexter and Newport, Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department deputies and half a dozen state troopers.
