BLUE HILL — High school halls usually are quiet during the summer months, but that is not the case at George Stevens Academy. With enrollment at nearly 100 students, the first summer session appears to be well received by a diverse and varied student body, according to Marie Keevan, summer session director.

Ranging from nine years of age to “senior status,” students come from Blue Hill peninsula towns, Stonington and as far away as Florida to participate in the 13 courses offered during the first session.

“Academic courses filled quickly and I’m especially pleased with the enrichment courses which range from community jazz band to studio art classes to Russian language,” Keevan said. The offering of violin and voice instruction fills a unique need in the area, Keevan added.

The second summer session will begin July 30 and continue through Aug. 17 with morning and evening classes. Courses to be offered include accounting, basket weaving, intermediate computer literacy, English, beginning guitar, a guitar rhythm and blues workshop, job strategies, landscaping, Maine coastal studies, multimedia representations, pottery, Scholastic Aptitude Test preparation, sculpture, upholstery, violin, weaving and woodworking.

Tuition costs range from $25 to $200. Scholarship funds are available based on guidelines of the federal reduced lunch program. Enrollment is open to students of all ages.

To register or for additional course information contact the school’s Development Office at 374-2800.
