EAST NEWPORT — One person was killed and seven were injured after a two-car head-on collision in East Newport Friday evening.

The accident occurred at 6 p.m. at the intersection of Routes 2 and 7, where another accident happened earlier this week.

A twisted stop sign may have been the reason that Michael Matteson, 21, of Virginia, failed to yield the right of way as he entered Route 2 from Route 7. He struck a 1985 Oldsmobile headed north.

Matteson and five children in his car were being treated for serious injuries in the crash.

The operator of the Oldsmobile, Patricia McAlpine, 48, of Etna, was killed instantly in the accident. Her passenger, 22-year-old Wayne McAlpine, also of Etna, was seriously injured in the accident.

All of the victims were taken to Sebasticook Valley Hospital in Pittsfield where they were being evaluated and treated at press time.

The young men in the Virginia car, a 1988 Volkswagen, were part of a caravan of campers with canoes, headed north for the weekend. Injured were Thor Petterson, 13, of Falmouth; Fletch Tyson, 13, of Richmond, Conn.; and Andre Ezequelle, 13; Joshua Pincus, 12; Colin Leonard, 13; all of Virginia.

Newport Officer Scott Webber was assisted by Officer Glenn Raymond, Sgt. Sanger Davis, Penobscot County Sgt. Ronald Green and several state troopers. Ambulances from Pittsfield, Corinna, Carmel and Hartland/St. Albans worked with Newport Rescue at the scene.
