Democrats’ own S&L scandal

Before Sen. George Mitchell becomes more holier than thou on the savings-and-loan scandal and absolves the Democrats of all responsibility in this affair, maybe he would like to explain the following:

In The Boston Globe of July 13, it was revealed that several senators had received campaign money from Kenneth Good regarding Silverado Savings and Loan. The names and amounts appear below:

George Mitchell, $500

Lloyd Bentsen, $1,000

Bob Kerry, $500

Ted Kennedy, $500.

Let’s not forget the Keating Five: Sens. Glenn, Riegle, Deconcini, Cranston, and McCain. According to the same article, Charles Keating was not enough for Sen. Riegle, who received thousands from Silverado and its borrowers.

We can’t let this issue leave without mention of Speaker Jim Wright and Rep. Tony Coehlo who, respectively, protected unsafe thrifs and then milked them for campaign contributions.

The Democrats are in the savings-and-loan scandal right up to their eyebrows. Dennis R. Clark Dover-Foxcroft
