BUCKS HARBOR — The ‘Port and Starboard Yacht Club will hold its annual regatta Saturday, July 28, in the waters of Machias Bay. If the weather is inclement the race will be held Sunday, July 29.

Last year’s ideal conditions attracted 11 sailboats in each of the three classes. Both new and experienced sailors participated in a very close race. The 1989 winner, for the second year in a row, was Dr. Karl Larson of East Machias, in his Vega, Sonett.

The yacht club was founded in 1967 and incorporated in 1980. Its name, the ‘Port and Starboard Yacht Club, derives from a melding of the nautical terms with the coastal areas from which many of the early members hailed (Machiasport and Starboard).

As more people have moved into the area, the club has noticed an increased number of boats in the nearby harbors. Participation in the race is open to any interested party sailing a monohullcq boat. Race organizers hope for a good turnout this year. The 10-mile triangular course is easily managed by beginning sailors as well as Machias Bay regulars.
