The Lotto America jackpot will revert to the minimum $2 million when the third drawing open to Maine players is held Wednesday, officials said Sunday as they announced that the winning ticket in the latest drawing was purchased in Wisconsin.
Wisconsin Lottery spokesman Steve Madsen said a man called a Milton store to say he was holding the Lotto America ticket worth nearly $5 million as a result of Saturday night’s drawing.
The ticket was purchased at Milton Family Foods, a small, family owned supermarket located in the south-central Wisconsin town of Milton, Madsen said.
“The whole town in buzzing,” store owner Don Dunn said. “We’re just happy for the people. Glad they played the lottery locally. It shows anybody can win.”
The winning ticket is the second jackpot won in Rock County, the only Wisconsin county which has had more than one multimillion dollar winner, Madsen said.
Milton Foods, located in a town of 4,500 about six miles north of Janesville, became a lottery outlet during the game’s expansion in May and June, Madsen said.
“They are the first of our new retailers to have a winner,” he said.
The jackpot is worth an estimated $4.84 million and the winner, who hasn’t revealed himself yet, will receive approximately $242,000 annually.
“One of the store owners said he was called and someone said `I have it.’ They don’t have any idea who it is. We’ll do the usual dance on Monday at the store where everyone will meet our latest millionaire,” Madsen said.
Wisconsin players have won $77 million since the state joined Lotto America Aug. 10, 1989, Madsen said.
“It’s the tenth time we’ve won in 21 drawings,” he said.
An additional 62 players matched five of the winning numbers to win $1,193 each, and 4,667 players matched four numbers to win $37 each. Twenty-eight Wisconsin players matched five and 1,987 matched four.
Saturday’s winning numbers were 7, 25, 28, 32, 38 and 51.
Maine last week joined the multistate lottery, which features twice-weekly drawings for minimum jackpots of $2 million. Lawmakers approved the action earlier this year as part of Gov. John R. McKernan’s package for balancing the state budget.
