What do you know about Alzheimer’s disease? About the effect of cocaine on blood flow in the brain? Nuclear medicine imaging can show graphically the disturbances in the blood flow to the brain of Alzheimer patients. It can show what a brain on drugs looks like without physically invadlng the body.

The staff at Eastern Maine Medical Center’s Nuclear Medicine Department will observe Nuclear Medicine Week July 29-Aug. 4. An exhibit featuring educational materials which highlight nuclear medicine’s contributions in the areas of diagnostic imaging, therapy, cancer treatment, and research will be displayed in front of the EMMC cafeteria on Level 2.

In addition to providing a way to see anatomy, nuclear medicine has for decades allowed physicians to examine organ function. Today, with nuclear medicine, physicians are beginning to discover and understand the complex physiological processes of the brain, heart, and other organ systems.

For more information about nuclear medicine call the EMMC Nuclear Medicine Department at 945-8180.
