SCARBOROUGH — Hannaford Bros. Co. said Tuesday that a manufacturing error resulted in 64-ounce containers of Shop ‘n Save ammonia being mislabeled as Shop ‘n Save bleach.

All incorrectly labeled product, available for purchase July 16-24 only, was removed from Shop ‘n Save, Martin’s and Sun Foods store shelves in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts and New York by 2 p.m. Tuesday. The manufacturer was notified to prevent future occurrences.

Shop ‘n Save is asking all customers who purchased 64-ounce containers of either Shop ‘n Save bleach or Shop ‘n Save ammonia between July 16 and 24 to check their bottles carefully. Shop ‘n Save ammonia should have a white cap. Shop ‘n Save bleach should have a blue cap. All bottles bearing the production code of 0193 21 are incorrectly labeled. (The production code is located on the shoulder of the bottle, above the product label.) Incorrectly labeled bottles may be returned to any Shop ‘n Save store for refund or exchange.

Hannaford Bros. cautioned consumers that ammonia is chemically very different from bleach and should never be mixed with, or used as a substitute for, bleach. Mixing of the two substances will result in the production of a gas which can cause eye irritation or respiratory problems.

Customers with questions regarding these products should contact Anne-Marie Davee, manager of consumer affairs, at 1-800-442-6045 in Maine, or 1-800-341-6393 in New York, Massachusetts, New Hampshire and Vermont.
