A Corinna man will spend a six-month sentence under so-called house arrest for his part in the theft of money from a Bangor laundry.
Edgar Paradis, 36, was ordered Friday in Penobscot County Superior Court to a one-year prison term, half of which was suspended, and two years of probation during which he is to complete 100 hours of community service. Rather than spend time in jail, he will serve the sentence under close monitoring at home under the Intensive Supervision Program.
Justice Jack O. Smith also ordered him to make restitution of nearly $1,670 to Gold Star Cleaners, from which Paradis, Candicecq Niski and Holly Russell were convicted of stealing money last summer.
The two women had worked at the laundry. Russell was responsible for closing the business the night of the theft, which took place the day after Niski finished working there. The money was taken from a safe.
Paradis was convicted after a trial in March. Niski, 22, also of Corinna, was sentenced in May to 60 days in jail for her part in the theft, but received a four-month reprieve because she had a newborn baby by Paradis. She pleaded guilty in December.
Russell, 19, of Cardville, received a nine-month sentence in March, having pleaded guilty to the crime last fall. She admitted to the theft the day after it happened.
The laundry theft happened less than two weeks after she pleaded guilty to charges stemming from a traffic fatality in Milford and three days before she was sentenced to six months in jail for that offense. Russell was driving a car in February 1989 that struck and killed 33-year-old Daniel Lagasse, who reportedly was lying in the road.
