BATH — The Grand Banks schooner Sherman Zwicker is on display at the Maine Maritime Museum. The Sherman Zwicker is a restored Grand Banks fishing schooner that represents scores of sister vessels which sailed to the Banks in the salt fish trade in the early 1900s.

The schooner was built in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia, for the Zwicker and Co. Limited in 1902. The Zwicker, 142 feet long, with shortened masts, no main boom in her sail rig, and a 320 horsepower 8 cylinder Fairbanks Morse engine, could cruise at 9 1/2 knots regardless of weather conditions.

The vessel fished for almost 20 years under Capt. Crouse of Lunenburg and then under Capt. Burrey from Glovertown, Newfoundland, until 1968. Her fishing career at an end, the Zwicker was restored as a museum by the Grand Banks Schooner Museum Trust, which keeps the vessel operational, original, and active.

This interpretive exhibit at Maine Maritime Museum contains exhibits and artifacts that preserve the history of the Grand Banks fishermen and the salt fish industry. It is on display from 9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily, at Maine Maritime Museum, 243 Washington St., Bath.
