ORONO — The Black Bear Inn in Orono will be the setting Aug. 7 through 9 for the annual Adult and Community Education Directors Summer Academy. Coordinators of the activities are Dana Green, state director, and Donald Martin, staff development director.

The topic for Tuesday is “New Directors Day.” Attendance is recommended for newly hired adult and community education directors, assistant directors and adult basic education coordinators. Directors with fewer than three years of experience are encouraged to attend the meeting.

Agenda items for that day include a presentation “The New Department of Education and the Division of Adult and Community Education” by Robert Curran, consultant. A special item on the agenda is a one-hour tour of the University of Maine Staff Development Project for Adult and Community Education Special Services Library at Orono.

Wednesday will include a workshop by Robert Curran titled “My Turn to Shine.” This will include information for school approval visits and program reviews for the fiscal year 1991. The second morning workshop will be given by John Forster of Augusta, Joan Susi of Biddeford and Conrad Walton of Caribou, with Larinda Meade as facilitator, titled “Younger Adult Learners.”

The third workshop, titled “The Community We Serve,” will have Robert Curran as facilitator, assisted by Andre Pied of Skowhegan on counseling services; Cynthia Tanous, NOVA, business/workplace services, and Lynn Campman, UM literary services. The last morning workship, titled “The Nitty Gritty of Program Operations,” will be given by Dana Green. Topics will include public relations, publicity, course catalogs, student recruitment and other phases of adult education.

The first afternoon workshop will be given by Clayton Blood and Larinda Meade, titled “High School Completion Courses.” The final workshop is titled “Individualized Instruction” with Robert Crotzer as facilitator.

Wednesday’s session will include a special presentation on “Adult Guidance Counseling for Directors” and “Firing Line,” an open discussion on the field of adult education.
