WARREN — Two people were killed and a third person suffered serious head injuries Sunday afternoon when a car went off Route 131 at a high rate of speed.
Killed in the accident were Michelle Leigh, 17, and James E. Fernands, 25, both of Waldoboro.
The driver of the vehicle, Stanley Tewskbury, 19, also of Waldoboro, remained in serious condition on Monday at Maine Medical Center, Portland, with severe head injuries.
There was no indication that any of the passengers wore seat belts, according to State Trooper Dale York, who investigated the accident. The three were thrown from the car which was demolished.
State police said the 1979 Chevrolet Monte Carlo was headed south on Route 131 from Warren toward Thomaston. At about 4 p.m., approximately one mile from Route 1, the vehicle went out of control and slammed into a power pole. Witnesses said the car rolled numerous times before it came to rest.
State police said the accident was blamed on excessive speed and alcohol. An assistant district attorney was called to the scene Sunday afternoon.
