Police rappers to present free concert at Husson

If the music is too loud at a youth rock concert Friday night at Husson College don’t bother to call the police, they’ll already be there.

Six police officers from Manchester, N.H., will perform a free rock ‘n’ roll and rap concert from young people in the fifth through eighth grades at 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, at the Newman Gymnasium.

Called Friends in Blue, this extraordinary rock group has received national attention and played to 75 groups around New England and is well-known in the southern part of the region.

The concert is being presented by the Bangor Housing Authority and the Bangor Police Athletic League. Tickets can be picked up at the Bangor and Brewer police stations and at the BHA.

Donning their traditional uniforms, these musicians will jam with drums, guitars and a saxophone to entertain the young people. The music is upbeat and includes messages for young people to stay away from drugs and to stay in school.

“The whole emphasis is kids having fun,” said Elsie Coffey, housing authority executive director. Once the concerts begin, she said, the young people are usually found dancing on the floor. “This is rock ‘n’ roll for kids.

“Normally concerts are for older students,” she said. “This gives kids in that age group a rock concert of their own.”

The concert is expected to last about an hour and a half.
