SAD 67 schools to put an end to double sessions this fall

With school scheduled to begin in about two weeks for five districts in northern Penobscot County, the good news for SAD 67 residents is that there will be no double sessions.

About one year ago, torrential rains resulted in extensive damage to the Ella P. Burr Elementary School and to Mattanawcook Academy, both in Lincoln.

It resulted in school being delayed one week, and about 800 pupils in grades one through eight who attended double sessions at the junior high school for the entire school year.

Pupils in grades one through five attended morning sessions and pupils in grades six through eight attended afternoon sessions. The double sessions meant a change in school schedules, with earlier school starts and later departure times from school. The afternoon session concluded at 5:15 p.m.

The asbestos-removal project at the Ella P. Burr Elementary School began in late February, and the restoration project began in April.

While the projects were estimated to cost about $655,000, bids came in about $109,000 below the estimates. Master Contractors Inc. of Lincoln did the restoration project and Portland Diversified Services Inc. did the asbestos removal project.

Emil Genest, the district’s business manager, said the projects were completed early.

“We encountered no problems,” he said. He said the district was pursuing insurance claims.

School staff are busy getting the newly restored elementary school ready for school. The interior of the building looks like a new school. The district received a $5,000 federal grant to purchase new convection ovens for the kitchen.

An open house of the Ella P. Burr Elementary School will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 23. Officials invite parents and residents of the district to tour the facility.

In SAD 67, school will begin for teachers with workshops Monday and Tuesday, Aug. 27 and 28. School will begin for students on Wednesday, Aug. 29.

Genest said first school bus pickup of students will be between 6:40 and 6:45 a.m. School lunches for students in grades one through 12 will be $1, and milk will be 25 cents.

School starting times are:

Carl Troutt School in Mattawamkeag: grades one-five, 7:30 a.m.-2 p.m.; morning kindergarten, 7:30-10:15 a.m.; and afternoon kindergarten, 11:15 a.m.-2 p.m..
