Bangor driver injured in Kenduskeag mishap

KENDUSKEAG — A Bangor man was treated Tuesday at Eastern Maine Medical Center after apparently falling asleep at the wheel while driving on Route 15 here.

Barry Ryan, 33, was driving north on Route 15 at about 7 p.m. when he slammed into cement barriers and a guardrail on a bridge, which is under construction, according to Trooper Richard Fowler of the Maine State Police.

Ryan’s 1990 Chevrolet station wagon stopped sideways on the bridge, blocking traffic for about 1 1/2 hours before a tow truck arrived, Fowler said.

Ryan suffered injuries to his face and other areas, Fowler said. An EMMC nursing supervisor said that Ryan was still being evaluated Tuesday night.

The station wagon, owned by Cooper Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of Bangor, was demolished, Fowler said. Fowler also said that neither speed nor alcohol was a factor in the accident, and that no charges would be filed against Ryan.

Fowler was assisted by Cpl. Jerry Sullivan of the state police and Deputy Doug Poor of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Department.
