Man indicted in fake ID case

PORTLAND — A federal grand jury Tuesday returned a four-count indictment against a man who has allegedly been using the name and Social Security number of a dead man.

The jury indicted Charles Robert Manning, who is believed to be 35 to 40 years old and a resident of Lewiston. All four counts of the indictment allege activities by Manning in connection with his use of the name Christopher J. Stevens.

If convicted as charged, Manning faces a possible maximum sentence of up to five years in prison and a maximum fine of $250,000 on each count.

In an unrelated matter, the grand jury also returned a three-count heroin-related indictment against Daniel J. Casale, 29, and Russell H. Wogan, 35, both of Scarborough.

The indictment charges both men with conspiracy, distribution of heroin and possession of heroin with intent to distribute it.
