PRESQUE ISLE — A local artist has been recognized for her original design of a two-sided silver coin commemorating Maine’s 100th state trapshoot.
Remillie A. Norsworthy, a professional artist and Presque Isle native, was contacted last year by the Maine Trapshooting Association and requested to design a double-side coin.
The 1 1/2-inch coin depicts a pine tree clinging to a rocky Maine coast, with a stylized ocean in the lower right. Crossed in the upper right are two typical trapshooting shotguns — a Krieghoff KS5 pointing to the left and a Beretta over-and-under to the right. Letters indicate the sponsor and the event. The reverse side has an outline of Maine, with a clay target in the center. Behind the outline are United States and Maine flags crossed over, with the state motto, Dirigo, between the flag tips and “1990 State Shoot Maine” below the staffs.
The designs will be used on program covers and commemorative T-shirts. They will appear on the cover of a book by long-time Maine trapshooter Monty Washburn, “Flinches and Other Strange Birds: The History and Humor of Maine Trapshooting Since 1874.” The face design has been used to produce a color-stitched commemorative patch available separately or attached to shooting hats.
Norsworthy has worked as a professional artist since 1986, specializing in pet and house portraits and wildlife and custom art.
Her husband, William, is a trapshoot competitior, and was named 1989 State Class B singles champion.
