One motorist had an unexpected encounter with a black bear on Monday night in Hancock, deputies reported.

Judith M. Olson, 50, a visitor from Minnesota, was travelling east in a 1990 Lincoln Town Car on Route 1 when a bear ran across the road near White Birches Motel and Golf Course. Olson’s car struck the bear, and the animal ran off into the woods. Deputies could not find the bear when they arrived at the scene.

Olson was not injured in the accident. The car sustained only $100 in damages.

An outboard motor was stolen from a boat near a shore residence off Route 3 in Trenton, deputies reported. The value of the motor was $1,200.

Ellsworth police have charged Robert Lesperence, 21, of Winslow, with driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor, driving after suspension, and failure to surrender a suspended license. Police stopped Lesperence on High Street near China Hill Restaurant on Tuesday night.

Bar Harbor police have charged Cleophe J. Revell, 45, of Portland, with disorderly conduct. Revell allegedly spat at people outside the local post office on Monday morning.

Deputies have charged Robert L. Smith, 28, of Bass Harbor, with assault against his wife in connection with an incident in Bass Harbor on Sunday night.

Local authorities have filed charges against the following:

James A. Bracy, 20, Southwest Harbor, failure to appear.

Charles P. Eaton, 44, Little Deer Isle, driving while under the influence of intoxicating liquor.

Christopher H. Clark, 24, Trenton, failure to appear in court.
