20 towns get $5.7 million in Block Grants

AUGUSTA — Gov. John R. McKernan has announced that 20 Maine communities have been awarded a total of $5.7 million in community revitalization funds from the 1990 Community Development Block Grant Program.

The CDBG Program provides funds annually to Maine communities to rehabilitate substandard housing, revitalize downtowns, improve public facilities and retain and create jobs. The program is funded through the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and administered through the Office of Community Development.

The following communities received funds:

Allagash, $330,000 for housing rehabilitation and road repair;

Appleton, $275,000 for construction of a fire station;

Bethel, $265,000 for public infrastructure, sewer and water;

Brooksville, $220,000 for a multipurpose building, housing and rehabilitation of the community center.

Calais, $300,000 for public infrastructure, sewer and water separation;

Caribou, $265,000 for housing rehabilitation, acquisition and relocation;

Caswell, $300,000 for housing rehabilitation and road reconstruction;

Eastport, $275,000 for public infrastructure, sewer, water and streets;

Farmingdale, $150,000 for sewer line construction and connections;

Frenchville, $370,000 for housing rehabilitation and sewer connections;

Isle Au Haut, $340,000 for housing rehabilitation and municipal wharf;

Jackman, $275,000 for housing rehabilitation, acquisition and demolition;

Madawaska, $285,000 for housing rehabilitation, sidewalks, lights and facades;

Mars Hill, $390,000 for public infrastructure, sewer, water and streets;

Milo, $390,000 for housing rehabilitation, sewer, streets and sidewalks;

New Sweden, $400,000 for housing rehabilitation and roadwork;

Old Orchard Beach, $125,000 for renovation of sewer pumping station;

Osborn, $300,000 for water supply for fire fighting;

Solon, $190,000 for construction of fire station;

Waterboro, $288,000 for public infrastructure and municipal water supply.
