Owls Head tax rate set for 1990

OWLS HEAD — Lloyd Painter, chairman of the Owls Head Board of Selectmen, announced the 1990 tax rate during the board’s meeting Monday.

The 1990 rate is $9.25 per $1,000 valuation, up from $8.60 per $1,000.

The total amounts figured in obtaining the rate include county tax, $121,522; SAD 5 commitment, $842,023; and municipal expense as voted at town meeting, $287,195.

Deducted from this was the total amount of $240,000, which includes revenue sharing, cash surplus excise tax and other sources, leaving the net amount to be raised of $1,040,844. This amount includes an overlay sum of $30,104.33.

This is the first time in the town’s history that the tax commitment has reached the million-dollar mark.

The total valuation of the town’s property is $112,523,744 for 1990. The total for 1989 was $111,307,820.

Tax bills will be sent out soon.

Selectmen have received the petitions signed by about 400 people who are unhappy about the increased noise at Knox County Airport at Ash Point. People are concerned about increased traffic at the airport if an instrument landing system is installed.

The petitioners also were concerned about the taking of more land, especially since the town voted in 1972 against expanding the airport.

Copies of the petition have been sent to all four members of the congressional delegation, state Rep. James Skoglund and Sen. Linda Brawn.

Copies also have gone to the Federal Aviation Administration in Washington, D.C., and the New England and regional offices of the FAA.

The petitions were started the day of the dedication of the new community building.

Connie Painter has compiled a scrapbook of pictures, names of volunteers and other information pertaining to the new community building, which may be seen at the town office.

Besides Painter, Selectman John Holman attended the meeting.
