Four people visiting from out of state were rescued from the Penobscot River Sunday after the canoe they were in capsized near the municipal boat landing in Old Town.

The four canoeists, Dorothy Johnson, 54, Dorothy Skwara, 49, Fred Schoolic, 54, and Ed Kerns, 51, all of New Jersey, were not injured, according to Sgt. Donald Rhodes of the Old Town Police Department.

Rhodes said the four were staying in Medway and were inexperienced at canoeing. Rhodes said the canoe bumped into a submerged log and Kerns overreacted and turned the canoe too quickly.

The canoe tipped over sending all four into the river. Rhodes said some people on shore heard the foursome yelling and called police. A game warden from Indian Island was nearby and jumped in his boat and rescued them, Rhodes said.

Bangor police reported that someone broke into the Columbia Street Baptist Church Saturday night. The intruder climbed through a window and went upstairs and kicked in the office door. Police said $10 was taken from a desk drawer that was pryed open.

Bangor police also investigated a break-in during the weekend at First Universalist Church on Park Street. It was unclear how the person entered the church, but once inside the door to the office was forced open and desks were rummaged through. Nothing was taken but the church sustained $50 in damage, police said. It had not been determined if the two incidents were related.

A severe rainstorm Saturday night reportedly caused an accident on Route 9 near the Ebb Tide Motel in Brewer. Stuart J. Wilson, 43, who listed the Ebb Tide Motel as his residence, was driving a 1983 Ford Escort when he drove off the road and into a guardrail, according to Cpl. Arden Jones of the Brewer Police Department.

Jones said Wilson’s head hit and cracked the windshield and he also sustained a severe cut on his arm. Jones said Wilson left the car in the ditch and walked back to his motel room. A motorist noticed the car about an hour later and contacted police. Wilson was located and taken to Eastern Maine Medical Center, and later released. The car received substantial damage, Jones said.

A resident of Westwood Road in Bangor reported that two sets of golf clubs were stolen from his garage. The clubs were valued at $1,300, police reported.

Scott Flannery, 31, Mexico, was arrested at the Budget Motor Inn early Saturday morning and charged with criminal trespass and disorderly conduct after he allegedly refused to leave the motel. Police reported that Flannery and some friends were being loud and obnoxious and refused to quiet down when asked. Flannery was taken to Penobscot County Jail and was scheduled to appear in 3rd District Court Sept. 24.

Michael Leckman, 29, 1 Acadia Ave., Bangor, was arrested and charged with criminal threatening after an incident at his home at 2 a.m. Saturday. Leckman was taken to Penobscot County Jail and was scheduled to appear in 3rd District Court on Sept. 24.

Timothy Marrs, 32, Sangerville, was arrested in Bangor and charged with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicating liquor and operating a motor vehicle while his license was suspended. He was taken to Penobscot County Jail and was scheduled to appear in 3rd District Court Oct. 1.

Robert J. O’Donnell, 41, of 59 Deer Isle, Bangor, was arrested in Bangor and charged with disorderly conduct after police were called to break up a fight Friday night on Water Street. O’Donnell was taken to Penobscot County Jail and was scheduled to appear in 3rd District Court on Sept. 24.

Harold Green, 63, of 80 Jefferson St., Apt. A, was arrested on Jefferson Street Saturday afternoon after a car accident in a parking lot. Police charged Green with operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of intoxicating liquor and failure to sign a traffic ticket. He was taken to Penobscot County Jail and was scheduled to appear in 3rd District Court on Sept. 21.

Carrol Haley, 49, of 390 Western Ave., Augusta, was summoned by Bangor police after he allegedly refused to pay a $6.50 cab fare. He was scheduled to appear in 3rd District Court on Sept. 24.

Benjamin Tirado, 32, Miami, Fla., was arrested at Club Roxy in Bangor Friday night. Tirado alleged refused to leave the bar, caused a scene and pushed a police officer when he was asked to leave. Tirado was charged with criminal trespass, disorderly conduct and assault. He was taken to Penobscot County Jail and was scheduled to appear in 3rd District Court on Sept. 24.

Asa Alley, 25, of 188 Center St., Brewer, was arrested in Brewer Saturday morning and charged with domestic violence after a fight at his house. He was taken to Penobscot County Jail and was scheduled to appear in 3rd District Court on Sept. 10.

Robert Hill, 34, Stacey’s Motel, Brewer, was arrested in Brewer and charged with operating a motor vehicle while his license was under suspension. he was taken to Penobscot County Jail and was scheduled to appear in 3rd District Court Sept. 10.
