David J. Hensler, an avian veterinarian with the state Department of Agriculture and a long-time bird lover himself, has just published a 64-page manual titled “Healthy Diet-Healthy Bird: Complete Guide to Avian Nutrition.”

The author sees his book as one of the easiest to use and most comprehensive of its kind available for both the novice bird owner and the serious owner-breeder. Much of the information has not previously appeared in a single publication, except for veterinary textbooks.

Topics range from the psychology of feeding through all major nutrients including water, to the issue of whether birds should eat seeds. The differences between maintenance and breeding diets are discussed; guidelines are included for feeding table foods; and a chapter is devoted to the special dietary needs of particular birds.

Based on his research and clinical experience, Henzler is convinced that the best all-around diets for caged birds are the relatively new pelleted rations.

Henzler plans to market the book through pet shops, aviculture journals, bird shows and direct mail. Information is available by writing Henzler at P.O. Box 5534, Augusta, Maine, 04332-5534.

Henzler resides in Augusta with his wife, Candy, and their three children.
