VEAZIE — Officials here working to repair the new Main Street bridge have been getting that sinking feeling again lately. And, like the bridge, they’re beginning to feel a little … depressed.
Town officials reported earlier this month that the bridge, which opened this spring after numerous construction delays, had an unexplained settling of the pavement on the bridge’s approach. The spot, about 20 feet long, was some 10 inches deep before being filled in by the Maine Department of Transportation.
Since then, both the MDOT and town officials have been keeping an eye on the spot, and attempts have been made to fill in a couple of subsequent settlings.
On Monday, two MDOT officials scheduled to meet with the Town Council couldn’t make it, although Town Manager Gerald S. Kempen said town officials still plan to meet with MDOT Commissioner Dana Connors.
Kempen said after the meeting that officials want two things from the MDOT — to find out what is happening to their bridge, and to receive assurances that the state will retain liability. Kempen said he has received a verbal promise on the latter concern.
Currently, no one knows exactly why certain areas of the bridge — another spot was noticed by a councilor recently — are depressed. Councilor Dan S. Smith, who said he noticed the newest pavement deficit recently, said the problem could stem from construction workers using frozen fill while completing the bridge.
“That certainly could be a likely reason for it,” Kempen said.
Kempen was the first to notice the problem when he found the original depression in late July. MDOT engineers, believing that it was caused by a steep slope, raised the walls of the bridge. This didn’t work, and the hole continued to sink, Kempen said earlier. And, the road continued to sink even after MDOT workers filled it in a few weeks ago.
Also, Kempen said he was uncertain of the final cost of the bridge — repairs included — because the final tab will not be complete until after workers place an overlay on the road. That, he said, will happen after the settling stops.
