PERRY — Frederick Trott, 49, of Perry was arrested early Wednesday morning for a shooting that wounded his son, Maxwell Trott, 26, late Tuesday night, the result of what a state police spokesman said was a “long-standing family feud.”

Stephen McCausland, public information officer for the Maine Department of Public Safety, said the shooting occurred at about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, at Frederick Trott’s home on the Old Eastport Road, where Maxwell Trott has been living since his discharge from the military last month.

Frederick Trott fired “two, possibly three shots from a 12-gauge shotgun into his house,” McCausland said. “One of the shots went through an open window. The pellets went through a wall and struck Maxwell Trott, who was standing on the other side of the wall. He underwent emergency surgery at Calais Regional Hospital. At least 12 pellets were removed from his head. Our investigators have determined there apparently was a long-standing family feud between the father and son.”

Maxwell Trott was released from the hospital briefly Wednesday morning to go to the scene of the shooting with investigators, McCausland said, but returned to the hospital for further treatment.

Frederick Trott was arrested without incident at 4:30 a.m. Wednesday at the home of a friend, about one mile from his house. He was charged with aggravated assault and reckless conduct with a firearm, and is being held in Washington County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail. He will be arraigned Thursday in 4th District Court in Machias.

Lt. Chris Tinker of the Pleasant Point Police Department said he was fueling his cruiser at the Wabanaki Mall on Route 1, about two miles from the Trott house, shortly after 11 p.m. Tuesday, “When he (Maxwell Trott) came barreling up in his pickup. He jumped out screaming, `I’ve been shot, I’ve been shot.’ He had a gash from his forehead to the back of his head; a lot of blood, like the shot grazed the side of his head.”

Tinker called the Pleasant Point Ambulance Co. and then the Regional Communication Center for assistance.

The investigation and arrest of Frederick Trott was made by Detective David Burns, Sgt. Wesley Hussey, Trooper Brian Higgins and other state police officers.
