New 120-room Bangor motel holds grand opening > Fairfield Inn built in 10 weeks

Constructed in less than ten weeks, the newest addition to Bangor’s hospitality industry, the Fairfield Inn on Odlin Road, had its grand opening Friday morning.

The 120-room motel, a franchise in the Marriott chain, was built by Ocean Properties, one of Thomas Walsh’s family of companies. A few days of finish details remain and a swimming pool will be added, said Thomas H. Palmer III, the general manager of the motel. But the inn has been renting rooms since Aug. 18.

Walsh, who owns property across the country, got his start 30 years ago with a motel on Wilson Street, Brewer.

The opening of the Fairfield marks a return home for Palmer, a Bangor native who has worked with the Walsh organization for 10 years. “It couldn’t be better,” he said after the ribbon-cutting ceremony. “Being away for 10 years, you realize the value of a Maine upbringing.”

Palmer worked at Walsh properties in Nashua, N.H., Delray Beach, Fla., and Durango, Colo., before being named to manage the Fairfield Inn in Bangor.

Fairfield Inn is Marriott’s newest chain of faciltiies targeting business and pleasure travelers. “While it is the budget end of Marriott, nothing was skimped in constructing or furnishing it,” Palmer said.

The speed of the work surprised Marriott, according to Palmer. “It knocked six months off their standard construction schedule,” he said. “That’s six months more revenue.”

In addition to owning more than two dozen hotels, inns and motels, Walsh owns his own construction company. Mark Moody, another Bangor native who has worked for Walsh for six years, oversaw construction of the Fairfield.

The company owns the forms used in casting the cement. The building was assembled of modules cast on site and put in place by a crane also owned by Walsh.

The lot was completely landscaped in four days — lawns, shrubs, and 30-foot trees planted and prospering.
