ORONO — Barbara J.W. Cole, assistant professor of chemistry and cooperating assistant professor of forest resources at the University of Maine, has been awarded a Fulbright Scholar Grant. She will lecture and conduct research from January through July 1991 at the University of Aveiro, Portugal.

The University of Aveiro chemistry department is developing a new master’s degree program in wood chemistry, one of Cole’s areas of expertise. “As a visiting scholar and wood chemist, I will be teaching a series of courses in wood chemistry and pulp and paper technology, initiating a research program that is appropriate to the needs of the pulp and paper industry in Portugal, and helping to establish a wood chemistry curriculum and course requirements for the new program,” Cole said.
