The American Automobile Association says that U.S. drivers must “rediscover” ways to save gasoline in the wake of the crisis in the Persian Gulf.

To help the process, AAA has published “Gas Watcher’s Guide,” and has made it available, free of charge.

“While oil supplies are adequate to meet present needs, smart car owners will become gas watchers again,” said J. Kay Aldous, a senior vice president of AAA. Aldous said that consumers should try to save gas to soften the effect of recent price increases and to extend natural resources.

“There are many painless ways to save gasoline and money,” Aldous said. “All it takes is a little planning to trim fuel use by 20 percent or more.”

In addition to good driving techniques and proper car maintenance, the AAA booklet offers advice on buying gasoline and gas-saving features to look for in new cars.

Car owners can receive a free single copy of “Gas Watcher’s Guide” from AAA clubs or by sending a stamped, self-addressed, legal-size envelope to AAA Gas Watcher’s Guide, Mail Stop 150, 1000 AAA Drive, Heathrow, Fla. 32746-5063.

Following are some of the gas-saving tips offered in the AAA publication.

An owner of more than one car should use the more fuel-efficient vehicle as often as possible.

Driving routes should be planned to allow travel at constant speeds and to bypass congested areas.

Travelers should start early in the day when traffic is light. Meal stops should be planned to coincide with peak traffic periods.

Extended idling to warm up the engine should be avoided. Drivers should accelerate gently and try to avoid highway driving for the first mile or so.

The best fuel economy is achieved by maintaining steady speeds. A car uses extra fuel when it accelerates. Drivers should keep enough space between them and the next car so they can accelerate gradually without closing the gap.

Radial tires reduce rolling resistance, usually at a fuel savings of 5 to 10 percent.

Gas tanks shouldn’t be filled. In hot weather, fuel expansion can cause an overflow.

Car owners should make sure that a replacement gas cap is the right one for their car. AAA says that a poorly fitting cap can create engine problems.

As many errands as possible should be combined into one trip. It is recommended that one location be found where banking, grocery shopping and other chores can be accomplished.

Dental and medical appointments should be arranged so that more than one family member can visit at the same time.
